Neal Ardley's men were always going to be up against it at United's plush Carrington training complex, and certainly made it hard for themselves by gifting the hosts two first half goals.
City's failure to clear a United corner lead to Irish defender Sean McGinty tapping in from close range on 18 minutes, and the lead was extended soon after. This time it was defender Michael Fornasier with an invitation to goal as he headed in following another corner.
City tried to rally in the second half but found United hard to handle. Welshman Tom Lawrence scored a penalty to make it 3-0 to the home side, followed closely by striker John Cofie's calm finish for a fourth.
Cardiff were dealt a fifth and final blow when a second penalty allowed Jack Barmby to get on the scoresheet.
Our under 18s will look to bounce back when they face Charlton Athletic at Treforest Playing Fields on Saturday.
