ADAM HURT IN WALES DEFEAT

Posted on: Thu 19 Nov 2009

BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA 2 WALES 1

Adam Matthews suffered a groin injury as Wales under-21s slumped to a shock defeat in Sarajevo after taking an early lead over Bosnia.

Cardiff City's teenage full back will be examined by club medical staff when he gets back to South Wales on Thursday night.

Swansea's Joe Allen gave Wales a fifth-minute lead, but Anes Haurdic struck in the 29th and 66th minutes to clinch victory for Bosnia, who also missed a 62nd minute penalty.

Midfielder Haurdic emerged as Bosnia's secret weapon - he had not appeared in their three previous UEFA under-21 group three qualifiers, when they had failed to win a match.

Brian Flynn's Wales, whose starting line-up included Cardiff pair Matthews and Darcy Blake, were favourites to beat the Bosnians after a run of seven games without defeat, but wind up their qualifying bid with two tough matches away to Italy and Hungary.

Matthews was subbed  by Swansea's Ashley Richards early in the second half, while Blake received a yellow card in the second half after conceding the penalty.

Wales:  Chris Maxwell (Wrexham), Neil Taylor (Wrexham),  Andy King (Leicester C, capt), Darcy Blake (Cardiff C), Christian Ribeiro (Bristol C), Joe Allen (Swansea C), Mark Bradley (Walsall), Simon Church (Reading), Ched Evans (Sheffield U), Adam Matthews (Cardiff C), Sam Vokes (Wolves). Subs: David Cornell (Swansea C);  Ashley Richards (Swansea C), Shaun MacDonald (Swansea C), James Wilson (Bristol C), Aaron Morris (Cardiff C), Marc Williams (Wrexham), Elliott Chamberlain (Leicester C)
