CHRIS IS A TARTAN TERROR

Posted on: Tue 15 Dec 2009

Dave Jones paid tribute to City match winner Chris Burke, saying: "He terrifies people and puts them on the back foot."

Manager Dave was speaking after City had won 1-0 at Middlesbrough - their third victory in a row and the third successive match that has seen Scottish wing wizard Burkey score.

This time, Chris netted with a free kick taken from wide out on the left, and Dave said: "Burkey's getting further and further out. He's scored one from 20, one from 25 and now he's scored one from 40 yards.

"If you put the ball in the right area it's one of them where the keeper is caught in two minds about coming out. In the end nobody tuched it and it went in.

"I was surprised Rangers let Burkey go when they did, but if you look at his record he had injuries and illnesses and sometimes a player needs a change. In Burkey's case it was the right time to move and get back to playing the way he is capable of.  We saw that at West Brom on Tuesday and we saw it again today.

"You've got to have good movement and we had plenty of that today. The ball was put into the box and you hope somebody gets on the end of it. Today it cleared everybody and just missed Chops to be fair. The keeper didn't know whether to come or not. But I don't care how they go in as long as they go in.

"Full credit to the players - they've worked hard over the past couple of weeks and have had the full benefit by taking the points they have."

The gaffer also paid tribute to the youngsters in the City squad. He said: "Adam Matthews came on at left back mainly because of the pace of Adam Johnson and again our boy did really well. The other night against West Brom, young Aaron Wildig came on. These are kids that we work really hard with and a lot of credit goes to Neal Ardley and his coaching staff at the Academy. They start at the beginning, and hopefully we polish them at the end.

"We have got some kids coming through, but today if you look at the bench it was a fairly strong bench for me. We know we've got to strengthen and we need more depth in the squad. We'll try to keep them all fit and get to January - the only problem is the chairman will think everyting is fine and we don't need to bring anyone else in!

"At the moment, the whole club is together. Everybody is working really hard on and off the field. The club just now is having good news basically every day.Last week it was the Langston deal, today it's three points, and there were three points at West Brom on Tuesday so at the moment it's a good place to be. But it's only a good place to be because everybody is working really hard.

"There's a good camaraderie among the players. There was that same cameraderie last month when we were losing, but the place was a bit dull. Full credit to my staff because they've worked hard to get the players up and running. Winning football matches is the best confidence booster I've ever known.

"Our defending from the front and our work rate is fantastic. I still think it could be better - there are are one or two who could work that little bit harder but that's why we're there - to keep chasing that magic 100 per cent."

On the injury front, Dave revealed that Kelvin Etuhu has a swollen ankle, Kevin McNaughton had been subbed after taking a kick on the calf, and Peter Whittingham went off with a groin starin.

"In Kevin's case, when you've been out for a long time like he has, you can't take risks because he's at that delicate stage where he's coming back to full fitness and regaining the tempo of first-team football. A player at that stage must not be pushed too much."

Dave explained how his sympathy with Gordon Strachan, who has had a tough start as Boro manager, must be limited. "I'm good friends with Gordon, I was good friends with Gareth Southgate, and another good friend of mine, Brian Laws, got the sack today.

"I'll have a drink with Gordon after the match, but I've just done battle with him and I've taken points off him so I'm trying to make his life harder. We have sympathy along the line but as soon as that whistle blows the sympathy stops because we are trying to do well for our football club. But Boro is a fantastic club and we're on our way to emulating what they've got."
