DAVE ADDS CONTEXT TO COUNTY LOSS

Posted on: Sat 24 Jul 2010

Despite the 2-1 defeat to Notts County in Saturday's pre-season fixture, Dave Jones was optimistic ahead of the forthcoming Championship campaign.

"There were a lot of good things to come out of today's game, although we've still to work on a few things in the next couple of weeks," said the manager.

"We made two poor mistakes today after being in possession of the ball, but it is better to make those errors now rather than come the start of the season.

"We didn't test their keeper as often as we should have in the first half, but by the same token, I don't remember Marshy having to make a save either."

And on a day that Aston Villa, Liverpool and Nottingham Forest all lost in pre-season friendlies, the boss was philosophical.

He said: "We haven't won or lost any points today so in that sense, the result doesn't matter too much. I've seen it happen many times before; if you pay too much attention to pre-season results you can end up with egg on your face come the start of the season."

The Bluebirds travelled without Jay Bothroyd this afternoon, the striker missing out on the match through injury.

"Jay has a problem with his arm at the moment, so we've kept him out of today's game," Dave continued. "He's fit and strong other than the arm, and there was no point risking him. We know what Jay's about and we know what he can do, so there was no need to play him when we didn't have to."

As reported in the local press on Saturday morning, full-back Mark Kennedy is in talks with Ipswich Town over putting pen to paper on a move to Portman Road.

On the subject, Dave said: "Sparky was offered a two year contract at Ipswich and they came in with an offer. We think its good business for us considering he's 35 and with only a year on his contract. It's also a sensible move for him, so it makes sense bearing in mind those two factors.

"We're still looking at players we want to bring in; it's unfortunate that that's taking longer than we would have wished but we're progressing."

And as for comments made by Michael Chopra earlier in the week regarding his and the Bluebirds' future, Dave was quick to put things in context, saying: "Chops was foolish to say what he said. He thought he was helping out but he did it the wrong way; he knows he's made a mistake.

"I think his performance today showed how committed he is to the club and he's hurting because things aren't going our way right now. Sometimes you've got to put up and shut up though and that's what he's done this afternoon.

"It's been made a bigger issue than what it is - what we want now is to start hearing some positive things come out. There's so much rubbish being written about us at the moment in general."

Finally, regarding speculation that the Bluebirds' gaffer was wanted by Premier League Fulham, Dave was eager to dispel any further conjecture, saying: "I've had no approach whatsoever from Fulham. I'm here, I'm fully committed here and over the past five years Cardiff City have had everything I've had.

"You never say never in football because you don't know what's round the corner; people can easily think you're not doing well and then get rid of you. There's nothing to talk about though, it's only speculation and I'm just getting on with my job here.

"I can assure our fans that I'm 100% committed to the club and fully focused on getting things right, just as I always have been."
