Dave Jones was pleased to see the Bluebirds safely into the hat for the Carling Cup second round, but acknowledged visitors Burton for their performance and application.
"It was a very tough task for us - Burton were right in it until extra-time and even in the last seconds of normal time could have won it," said Dave. "We scored an early goal and then switched off and went sloppy. I thought we were a bit lazy and slow in our movement and Burton made it difficult for us.
"I'm pleased that a lot of our players got playing time under their belts and got the game time that they needed," he continued. "Then there were the likes of Burkey and Whitts who played for the full 120 minutes who I thought stuck at it and did really well.
"There were five good goals scored on the night; our four were really well taken, but I think Burton's goal was a good one too. I just felt that after we went 2-1 up we upped the tempo and played the ball around better."
Jason Koumas made his second Bluebirds debut with twenty minutes of normal time remaining, and the manager was happy with his and others' involvement.
"Jason was only supposed to get twenty minutes but ended up playing forty-five with the extra time," explained the gaffer. "I was pleased with that though, and the fact that the likes of Anthony Gerrard, Adam Matthews, Paul Quinn, Ross McCormack and Tom Heaton and lengthy spells on the field too was very good for the squad. There are a lot of tired bodies this evening; I'm pleased that we came through the game, but we could have made life easier for ourselves."
Another positive of the evening for Dave was the introduction of new signing, Martin John. With reference to the defender, the manager said: "Martin has come over from Canada and can speak five different languages. He came over to train with us just over a week ago and we've given him a year now to prove himself. He was a bit nervous tonight as you would expect but he's a good player who's comfortable on the ball. We threw him in to the game to have a look at him and I think it was a good initiation, especially seeing as he was suffering with cramp with half an hour to play."
The Bluebirds will now face League One side Peterborough United at London Road in the second round of the competition. The tie will be played during the week commencing 23rd August.
