The Bluebirds took the lead early in the first half through Jay Bothroyd, though Leicester equalised shortly after through Michael Morrison. A Dany N'Guessan strike five minutes before the interval meant the visitors went in ahead at the break.

Leicester continued to play well in the second half, but the introduction of Chris Burke turned the tie in the home side's favour. Peter Whittingham equalised with twenty minutes to go and the Bluebirds pushed for a winner. It didn't look like coming as the game went in to injury time, though Chris Burke popped up just inside the area to drive the ball home and send the Bluebirds faithful wild. Ross McCormack scored his first goal of the season a minute before the final whistle to wrap up the tie in celebratory fashion.

Chronological Report

The visitors kicked off the fourth round fixture and looked threatening from the start, their first opportunity coming after two minutes when Martyn Waghorn struck over on the volley from inside the Cardiff area. Yann Kemorgant had another opportunity seconds later, his first touch letting him down after he'd found a good position.

Leicester dominated the opening ten minutes and Dany N'Guessan should arguably have done better when shooting at Marshall from a decent angle inside his area. Fortunately for the Bluebirds the strike was high and wide, but the visitors had taken a strong foothold early on in the cup tie.

City soon started to come in to the game, and some determined play by Darcy Blake seemed to lift the Bluebirds supporters. Jay Bothroyd began seeing plenty of the ball in advanced positions and Leicester may have felt they should have made more of those early opportunities.

The Bluebirds took the lead on seventeen minutes in spectacular fashion. Birthday-boy Joe Ledley broke up play in the Leicester midfield before releasing Michael Chopra down the right hand flank. Chopra steadied himself before whipping in the perfect ball for Bothroyd to run on to and score a text-book diving header past the helpless Chris Weale.

GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 1-0 LEICESTER CITY (Bothroyd, 17).

Leicester continued to play their neat passing brand of football following the setback, the Bluebirds perhaps failing to push on after taking the lead. But the ball remained around the central areas of the park, neither side putting much pressure on the opposing team's final third.

Leicester equalised from a set-piece much to the chagrin of Dave Jones. A harsh free-kick given against Blake midway inside the Bluebirds half gave Paul Gallagher the opportunity to whip the ball in to a crowded Cardiff area; Michael Morrison rose highest and virtually unmarked to head home past a rooted David Marshall.

GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 1-1 LEICESTER CITY (Morrison, 34).

The visitors took the lead five minutes before the interval. The Foxes continued to push and press the Cardiff midfield, City unable to clear their lines time and again. A hopeful looking long-ball down the throat of the Cardiff defence allowed N'Guessan to bully his way in between Anthony Gerrard and Mark Kennedy before bundling the ball home past Marshall.

GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 1-2 LEICESTER CITY (N'Guessan, 39).

Cardiff just couldn't get back in to the game as Nigel Pearson's Foxes continued to push hard for a third. Kemorgant found himself with half a chance from six yards out just before half time, though Gerrard hustled the striker off the ball to defend and clear well. N'Guessan had two further striking opportunities before the half time whistle sounded - he should have done better with each and Leicester should have been ahead by more.

HALF TIME: CARDIFF CITY 1-2 LEICESTER CITY

Leicester began the second half at much the same pace as they finished the first. Richie Wellens and Matt Oakley were dominating the central midfield areas and the City defence were immediately put under threat from the long ball tactic.

The Bluebirds began seeing more of the ball ten minutes in to the half, though were failing to make the final ball count too often. Perhaps the best opportunity fell to McCormack inside the area, though when he feigned to shoot was bundled off the ball to his knees. City asked for a penalty but it was waved away by referee Crossley.

City had another great chance just before the hour mark when Chopra swivelled and shot from twenty-five yards out. Weale parried Chopra's effort and McCormack couldn't follow up the rebound under pressure from Jack Hobbs.

Substitution Cardiff City: Chris Burke on for Paul Quinn (60 mins).

Some neat interplay between Blake and Whittingham toward the right side corner flag resulted in a free-kick awarded to the Bluebirds. Directly from the free-kick, from an audacious angle, Whittingham curled the ball in to the far corner to draw City level. The goal was deserved on the back of City's much improved second half display.

GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 2-2 LEICESTER CITY (Whittingham, 70).

The tide had turned at Cardiff City Stadium and after being under the cosh for so long in the first half, City were pushing for a winner. Bothroyd won a free-kick for City in the same position from which Whittingham scored earlier; he stepped up to take this one and tried the same thing, though this time his accuracy was out and the effort curled over.

David Marshall made a world-class double save with ten minutes to go after Leicester had won a corner.Wayne Brown headed a bullet header at Marshall which the big Scot saved superbly, pushing away Hobbs' equally accurate second attempt.

Substitution Leicester City: Matty Fryatt on for Martyn Waghorn (82 mins).

Leicester had chances to steal it in the closing five minutes and really looked to push, but as the stadium clock ticked towards ninety minutes it became a game that either side could snatch. Chris Burke won a corner for City as the referee's assistant indicated there would be four minutes of additional time. Unfortunately the referee blew for a Cardiff infringement giving Leicester the chance to clear their lines.

Then, in injury time, City grabbed the winning goal. Whittingham pumped a free-kick in to the area which was headed out only as far as Ledley. Ledley's shot was inaccurate, though it fell for a second time to Burke who rifled home the ball from just inside the box.

GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 3-2 LEICESTER CITY (Burke, 90+2)

Leicester's heads dropped and it allowed City to end the game in dramatic style. Chopra cut inside the box to capitalise on some slack Leicester defending; he shot at Weale who did well to save, but Ross McCormack followed up to finish the game off and score his first goal of the season in the process.

GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 4-2 LEICESTER CITY (McCormack, 90+3)
