Following on from part one of our Tom Heaton interview, the young goalkeeper continues his conversation with Scott Dewey, covering his upbringing at Old Trafford and the experiences gained with the European and Premier League Champions.
City: Have you always been a goalkeeper or did you play in a different position in your youth?
Heaton: When I was very young I played centre midfield for Wrexham while at school in the under 11's - but at the same time I was also doing my goalkeeping coaching with Wrexham. In the end I decided to go with the goalkeeping because it's less running!
City: Who were your childhood football heroes while growing up?
Heaton: Well Peter Schmeichel was certainly one and the way he played and what he brought to the team I thought was fantastic. I used to enjoy watching him and then as time went on a little Edwin van der Sar certainly was one I used to watch and look at. You could see what he brought to the team and obviously I was fortunate enough to start working with him a couple of years ago and he's been absolutely fantastic.
City: So you are a Manchester United fan as well as a Manchester United player then?
Heaton: I am, yes.
City: What have you learnt during your time playing for the reserves at Manchester United?
Heaton: Well obviously there is a good standard of football and they play the right way and they try and play the Manchester United way. Obviously when I was a bit younger it was a good standard of game, but as time has gone on and as I have got a bit older it's been good for me to just play some games. Although it has been a touch frustrating staying with the reserves, obviously you need to play some games and I was happy to do that.
City: You've worked under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. What's it been like working under someone of that stature?
Heaton: Absolutely fantastic to be honest. It's difficult to put into words how he manages the club and how good he is and how much respect he gets from the players. It's frightening really, it's been a pleasure to learn from him and work with him and long may that continue.
City: Did you go out to Moscow for the Champions League Final with the squad?
Heaton: I did, yes. I was in the squad and I didn't make the bench or obviously play, but I was in the stand with a few of the other players and that was fantastic to be involved in that calibre of game. It was great for me, as obviously I can take a lot out of that. There's not much more you can do in club football than win the Champions League, so it was fantastic to be involved in.
City: You helped the reserve team to win the Northern league title in 2005, has that given you extra motivation to be successful?
Heaton: Yeah, definitely. I think every team you ever play in, certainly my aim is to make it a successful one and that year was obviously a fantastic year for us, I think we scooped up about four or five trophies and we had a very good team actually. Obviously it's nice to taste success and hopefully I can bring that to Cardiff.
City: You've got the potential to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar. What would that mean to you, to potentially be the Manchester United number one someday?
Heaton: Everything really. As soon as I started to play for them at under 12's when I first signed, that was the goal we set out for me to achieve. And as time has gone on nothing's changed really, and this is hopefully just another step to do that and that is certainly in the back of mind all the time.
