EARLY TEAM NEWS v CLARETS

Posted on: Mon 08 Dec 2008

Cardiff got back to winning ways and moved back into the top six after overcoming promotion rivals Preston at Ninian Park last time out. Next up for the Bluebirds, is a mouthwatering clash with in-form Burnley. Simon Glanville takes a look at how the match will shape up.

Cardiff team news: Cardiff will assess the fitness of three of the players who started against Preston before the trip to Burnley. Least likely is Ross McCormack who came off before half-time in that game with a hamstring tweak, while Mark Kennedy also came off on the hour mark after feeling a hamstring strain of his own. Roger Johnson completed the full 90 minutes but did have a slight groin problem, so all three will have to prove their fitness before the squad travel.

Michael Chopra is likely to return to the starting line-up on Tuesday, possibly in place of McCormack, after recovering from a bout of sickness and a heal injury. Miguel Comminges could replace Kennedy, while Darren Purse would deputise for Johnson.

Stephen McPhail will miss out through his suspension, while Tony Capaldi has given Dave Jones a boost by returning to training, although it is likely he won't be back in first-team action until gaining more fitness.

Burnley team news: Defender Michael Duff will need to prove his fitness to manager Owen Coyle after he missed the Claret's last game at Sheffield United after injuring himself in the warm-up.

Chris McCann also missed the Sheffield United game through illness, but will be hoping to recover in time to face the Bluebirds. A player that is likely to return to the Burnley starting 11 is Clarke Carlisle, as he has now served his suspension.

Former Bluebird Steven Thompson will be hoping to keep his place in the side so that he can face his former club. The Clarets were the team Thommo first faced on the move from the SPL, netting two in the second half following our mad-cap Dirty Sanchez half time show.

Burnley's season so far: Burnley will host City on Tuesday sitting in fourth in The Championship, and the Clarets are up there on merit.

Despite only gaining two points from their first four league games, the Clarets have been impressive in their surge towards the top of the table, beating the likes of Derby, QPR, Reading and most recently, Sheffield United, along the way.

It's not just the league that Burney have been flying high in, after knocking out Arsenal in the Carling Cup quarter-finals, they have progressed to the semi-finals where they will face holders Tottenham. And if they can get past Spurs over two legs, they will face either Derby or Manchester United at Wembley.

Last meeting: Cardiff had a good record against Burnley last season, taking four points off the Lancashire outfit. In the first league meeting, at Ninian Park in October of last year, City came out on top in a tight game.

Joe Ledley's goal put Cardiff ahead at the break, and although Ade Akinbiyi equalised shortly after half-time, Paul Parry grabbed the winner. In the return fixture at Turf Moor in April of this year, both sides shared the points in a six-goal thriller. Goals from Graham Alexander and Andy Cole put the Clarets 2-0 up after 54 minutes, but a Joe Ledley penalty and Aaron Ramsey's first ever league goal got Cardiff back in the game.

Clarke Carlisle then thought he had won it for the home side, but Steve Thompson, who ironically now plays for Burnley, popped up with an 89th minute equaliser.

Teams from last meeting at Turf Moor on 26th April 2008:

Burnley: Jensen, Alexander, Carlisle, Caldwell, Jordan, Elliot (MacDonald 79), O'Connor, McCann (Gudjonsson 77), Blake (Mahon 87), Akinbiyi, Cole. Subs not used: Kiraly, Duff.

Bluebirds: Enckelman, Blake, Purse, Loovens, Capaldi, Ramsey, McPhail (Ledley 45), Sinclair, Scimeca, Hasselbaink (Whittingham 67), Thompson. Subs not used: McNaughton, Rae, Johnson.

Attendance: 10.694.

Burnley last time out: Burnley added to their midweek scalp of Arsenal and continued their recent good form in the league with a thrilling win at promotion rivals Sheffield United. Martin Paterson's tap-in put the Clarets ahead at Bramall Lane, but James Beattie equalised from the penalty-spot. Burnley then took control after Gary Alexander scored with a penalty of his own and Chris Eagles found the net. Stephen Quinn's late reply ensured a nervy finish, but Burnley held on for an impressive victory.

Burnley: Jensen, Elliot, Caldwell, Alexander, Thompson, Jordon, Gudjonsson, McDonald, Eagles, Blake (MacDonald 68), Paterson (Akinbiyi 85). Subs not used: Penny, Mahon, Van der Schaaf.
