EARLY TEAM NEWS v COVENTRY

Posted on: Wed 28 Jan 2009

After earning a replay against the mighty Arsenal at Ninian Park on Sunday, Cardiff must first switch their attention back to league action, before travelling to the Emirates in just over a week's time. Simon Glanville previews our midweek clash with Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena, a game in which City will hoping to pick up another three points.

Cardiff team news: Peter Whittingham will miss the clash with the Sky Blues and may be out for up to three weeks after damaging his hamstring. The winger also missed the clash with Arsenal but Chris Burke will continue to deputise.

Jay Bothroyd will face a late fitness test after picking up a knock against the Gunners, but other than that Dave Jones will have a fully fit squad to choose from.

Coventry team news: Coventry should have new signing Lee Sawyer available for the visit of Cardiff. The teenage midfielder has joined on a months loan from Chelsea and will go straight into the Sky Blues squad.

Aron Gunnarsson (hip) and Elliot Ward (knee) will have to prove their fitness to Coleman ahead of the Championship clash.

Coventry's season so far: Coventry have had a decent if not spectacular first half of the campaign, and will visit Ninian Park sitting in a comfortable mid table position.

The Sky Blues, under the guidance of Chris Coleman, have struggled to find consistency but are only eight points adrift of the play-off places, meaning a late season surge could see them sneak into the top six.

Last meeting: We have already beaten Coventry this season, in another midweek game at Ninian Park back in late September. A Jay Bothroyd goal put City ahead at the break, and Ross McCormack doubled the advantage from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining. Coventry did get one back through Scott Dann, but the Bluebirds held on for an important win.

Teams from last meeting at Ninian Park on 30th September 2008:

Bluebirds: Heaton, McNaughton, Purse, Roger Johnson, Kennedy, Whittingham, Rae, McPhail, Ledley, McCormack, Bothroyd. Subs not used: Enckelman, Gyepes, Eddie Johnson, Parry, Comminges.

Coventry: Westwood, Fox, Ward (Hall 46), Dann, Osbourne, Doyle, Tabb (Mifsud 70), Gunnarsson, Morrison (Best 73),Eastwood, McKenzie. Subs not used: Marshall, Beuzelin.

Attendance: 16,312.

Coventry last time out: Whilst Cardiff had a glamorous F.A. Cup tie with Arsenal at the weekend, Coventry had a trip to Torquay in the same competition. Despite the three division gulf between the two sides, it was the Conference outfit who dominated the game, but Elliot Ward's late goal broke Torquay's hearts at Plainmoor and sent the Sky Blues through to Round Five.

Coventry: Westwood, Gunnarsson (Ward 45), Hall, Turner, Fox, Mifsud, Doyle, Beuzelin (Thornton 64), McKenzie, Eastwood, Morrison. Subs not used: Marshall, Dann, Walker, Fraser, Wynter.
