MATCHDAY TEAM NEWS: DERBY

Posted on: Wed 30 Sep 2009

It was another disappointing defeat on Saturday after Cardiff succumbed at Sheffield Wednesday. Dave Jones' side though won't have long to think about the loss, with Derby visiting South Wales tonight. Simon Glanville previews a match 'City will be looking to win.

Cardiff team news: In some good news for Cardiff fans, full-back Kevin McNaughton is nearing a return to training, although Tuesday night's game will come too early for him. Stephen McPhail is available again after serving his three game ban, while Kelvin Etuhu and Ross McCormack remain on the injury list. Dave Jones may make changes following poor results in recent weeks, the first forced on him with Joe Ledley banned for one match.

Derby team news: Derby will have new signing Fredrik Stoor available after the Swedish international completed his loan move from Fulham over the weekend. James Vaughan, who also joined on loan recently, should also be involved, although Nigel Clough faces having a number of absentees.

Kris Commons, Stephen Pearson, Jake Buxton, Paul Green, Giles Barnes, Chris Porter and Steven Davis all missed the Bristol City game, with Clough hoping to have some of those players back in action at Cardiff City Stadium.

Derby's season so far: Not unlike Cardiff, Derby have had an inconsistent start to the season. An opening day victory over Championship new boys Peterborough got their season off with a bang, but Rotherham soon burst the Rams' bubble by knocking them out of the Carling Cup at the Don Valley Stadium. Another newcomer to the Championship - Scunthorpe - then edged them out in a five-goal thriller at Glanford Park, before a first away point of the season was earned at Blackpool.

A Miles Addison goal in the final minute then got Derby their second win of the season at the hands of Plymouth, before the club embarked on a four-game losing run. Forest beat them in the derby in another five-goal bonanza, with Sheffield United, Barnsley and Crystal Palace also inflicting defeats. Last time out though, that run was ended by a win over Bristol City, courtesy of Gary Teale's late strike.

Last meeting: Cardiff will be hoping for a repeat performance from when we last met Derby, which was back in April at Ninian Park. Goals from Roger Johnson, Gavin Rae, Jay Bothroyd and Eddie Johnson saw four goals for the home side, with Eddie also scoring in the wrong end to give the Rams some sort of consolation.

Teams from last meeting at Ninian Park on 8th April 2009:

Cardiff: Taylor, McNaughton, Gyepes, Roger Johnson, Kennedy, Rae, Whittingham (Burke 86), McPhail, McCormack (Parry 69), Bothroyd (Eddie Johnson 65), Chopra. Subs not used: Heaton, Comminges.

Derby: Bywater, Connolly, McEveley, Nyatanga, Albrechtsen (Todd 65), Savage, Sterjovski, Teale, Eustace, Bannan (Commons 64), Hulse (Villa 63). Subs not used Price, Pearson.

Attendance: 18403.

Derby last time out: The Rams secured all three points last time out after seeing off ten-man Bristol City at Pride Park. Jamie McCombe received his marching orders shortly before the hour mark for the visitors, and their numerical disadvantage eventually told when Gary Teale scored the winner five minutes from time.

Derby: Bywater, Connolly, Leacock, Moxey, Barker, Teale, Savage, Croft (Addison 89), Livermore (Hendrie 78), Vaughan (Dickov 64), Hulse. Subs not used: Deeney, McEveley, Stoor, Pringle.
