TOSH: IT HAD TO BE ASH
John Toshack has defended his decision to make Swansea's Ashley Williams Wales skipper for the first international match at Cardiff City Stadium.
Defender Williams, named Welsh Player of the Year and Welsh Club Player of the Year in midweek, was a shock choice after his criticism of Cardiff City's tactics following last weekend's South Wales derby, which the Swans won 3-2.
The news also came as a blow to Cardiff's Joe Ledley, who had been tipped to captain his country on his home ground.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's clash with Scotland, Tosh said: "We've been pleased with the way Ashley has settled in with Wales and he's had a good week with the win last week and the two awards he won.
"The fact he's a Swansea player had no more bearing on the decision to make him captain than the fact Joe Ledley is a Cardiff player had on the decision to make him captain in the past.
"I didn't think of the venue. The fact is that Ashley has become a bit more vocal, I'm pleased with his progress and that's the decision. It doesn't matter whether we're playing in Swansea or Glasgow, that's the choice."
Tosh praised Wales' new home, saying: "Cardiff City have been terrific with us over the venue. This could be a practice run for competitive games. It's a super stadium and we trained there yesterday. Maybe we'll be as at home there as we were at Ninian Park.
"I've no complaints about the Millennium Stadium - nobody likes their rugby more than me - but it would be nice if Cardiff City's new stadium could be our home for years to come. Hopefully we'll be able to fill it to capacity."
