STEVIE BACK AT CITY

Posted on: Mon 21 Dec 2009

Stephen McPhail makes a welcome return to Cardiff City this weekend.

Stephen has been undergoing radiotherapy treatment for lymph node cancer, and manager Dave Jones said: "Stevie is coming back in to see us today. He's just finished a fortnight's treatment and we'll see where he is.

"Obviously, he needs to get that problem solved. Only then can we deal with our concern, which is the thigh injury. Because of the treatment he's been having, he's behind in his rehab on the thigh injury,  although we're still hoping we'll have him back in the New Year and the sooner the better. But he's got bigger things to deal with first."

Speaking before Cardiff's Championship match with Leicester was postponed, Dave revealed that ankle injury victim Kelvin Etuhu could be in contention, banishing fears that the Manchester City loan forward could be out for a fortnight after damaging an ankle in the 1-0 win at Middlesbrough.

Dave said: "It shows what the players are trying to do when a young man here on loan is trying to shake off an injury when the easy thing would be to sit in the treatment room for a week and let it settle down fully. So even Kelvin, a loan player from Manchester City, is part and parcel of this group and he wants to get back asap. That's great because that means that everybody in the club is pulling the same way.

"Kelvin had a run yesterday and if we can get him training on Friday morning that will be a big bonus for us. The injury is not as big a problem as we first thought. He has had a scan and the swelling is down. It's just a matter of getting the stiffness out of the ankle.

"Kelvin has a chance for Saturday. He is a young player learning his trade. He's had an horrific period of his short playing career with injuries, and just when you think it's getting right he picks up another one. Then we get that right and he gets another. Maybe all the work we've done and all the work Manchester City have done to strengthen his ankles has helped him."

Kevin McNaughton (calf) and Peter Whittingham (groin) are also on course to face Leicester after picking up injuries at Middlesbrough.
