CHOPS: I'LL BE TOP SCORER

Posted on: Thu 04 Feb 2010

Michael Chopra has vowed to overtake Cardiff City team-mate Peter Whittingham and end the season as top scorer in the Championship.

Whitts is leading scorer in the division with 15, and three cup goals have boosted his total to 18. Chops is two behind on 16, 14 in the league.

But Chops said ahead of Friday's Championship match away to leaders Newcastle: "I want Peter to stay playing centre midfield because he's not scoring many goals. I spoke to him after the game on Saturday and said I hope the gaffer keeps him there because he isn't scoring and he's creating chances for me. Peter said he was going to stop creating them for me!

"Obviously there's a bit of banter through the club but Peter has been fantastic this season. Even he's surprised at how many goals he has scored. For a midfielder to score 18 goals is incredible.

"But I believe I will finish top scorer in the League. I've always said that from day one when I came to the club that I'd score 30 goals. I've got 16 so I've got 14 to go. It's a shame that I couldn't get a couple when I was going through my goal drought, but I've got to kick on now."

Chops also warned Newcastle that Cardiff are confident that they can become the first team to win in the league at St James' Park this season.

He said: "Newcastle have got a good chance of winning the League - they brought in six players during the transfer window, so they're really going for it.

"But the way we're playing at the moment, this is the best opportunity we'll have to be the first team to beat them at home.

"I saw Newcastle play Leicester on television on Saturday and they didn't seem as good a team as they used to be. We're playing some good stuff at the moment, so hopefully we can go up there and put up a fight.

"Our team is full of goalscorers. We know if we don't concede goals, we'll get chances to score them. It's down to the midfield and the forwards to score goals. If the defence are doing their job, then it's our job to score goals, and that's what's been happening recently.

"For some reason, we manage to play better against top teams and take points off them. We went to West Brom and won comfortably and we did the same at Middlesbrough so the lads are full of confidence, we're in good form and looking forward to Newcastle.

"I can't wait. This is one of the matches I've been looking forward to since the fixtures came out. Thankfully for me, I'm starting to score goals at the right time.

"I have a lot of belief in my ability and when I went 13 or 14 games without a goal, it was affecting me a little bit but I knew I just had to keep going and keep creating chances.

"If you look at me in the last few games, I could have got a hat-trick on Saturday, but it wasn't to be, although we still managed to get the win. I'm enjoying my football and back on a scoring run again. On Saturday, I scored the hardest chance of the three I got, and maybe it was a little lapse in concentration.

"The reception I got at Newcastle last season was bad. It was a local derby and I was playing for Sunderland. I knew when I went to Sunderland that I'd get a reception like that at Newcastle. Hopefully, Friday won't be as bad, but I'll still get stick.

"I watch Newcastle a lot. When the manager gives me time off and I go home, I'll watch them play. Obviously I take an interest in the club because it's where I was brought up, and another thing is that it's a football game and I enjoy watching games. My mates are all Newcastle fans.

"But if I'm one on one with the keeper on Friday, I'll be sticking it in the back of the net."
