FORGET SIX AND THE CITY

Posted on: Fri 26 Feb 2010

Dave Jones has promised that his Cardiff City players will NOT be on a revenge mission in Saturday's Championship clash at Preston.

Many Bluebirds fans believe last season's 6-0 defeat at Deepdale was a fatal blow to the club's play-off hopes, but manager Dave dismissed any thought of settling old scores this time round.

He said: "It doesn't work like that in football. When you go looking for revenge, then you normally don't get it in any sport because you're focussed on the wrong things.

"What you must focus on is doing what you're good at and making sure that you're concentrating 100 per cent and doing the right things and the right basics and you try and do that little bit extra.

"If you've got it into your head about what happened last year, then you never move forward. People ask whether we use a bad result like we had at Preston last year as a stick to beat the players with, but it never, ever works in football.

"That result was done and dusted when we got back. Of course the memory's still there but we won't go looking for revenge in any way because you won't perform to the level that's needed."

Dave revealed that he was more interested in getting over the disappointment of last Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Barnsley than plotting revenge over Preston.

He said: "This week we've worked hard - we've had our first free midweek for a while - and we've watched some match videos and got back to basics. It's been beneficial. We've done a lot of talking, hopefully some problem solving, made sure that everybody is well recovered and got in some good training at a high tempo. I hope that will come good for us on Saturday.

"Anthony Gerrard is OK after taking a blow on the head on Saturday. He wasn't concussed, so he'll be available. The only doubt tomorrow is Darcy, who's been ill. Warren Feeney's wife is expecting a baby, so he probably won't be with us.

"The players were dead on their feet after the Barnsley game and hadn't played well. But that doesn't mean they weren't trying.

"We've got to cut the players some slack because they're carrying knocks and bruises and a little bit of fatigue. Players have got to exercise some leadership, take responsibility and start trying to correct the mistakes we have been making."
