CITY LEGENDS SALUTE GERRY

Posted on: Thu 04 Mar 2010

Three former Cardif City stars will be in the club superstore on  Saturday to sign copies of the Gerry Hitchens Story - From Mine to Milan.

Colin Baker (1952-66), Alan Harrington (1951-66) and Charlie Rutter (1949-58) wil be on hand from 11am to approximately 1pm.

Bluebirds fans who are followers of Cardiff City's history will be interested in the story of forward Hitchens, whom we signed from Kidderminster Harriers for £1,500 in January 1955. He had been working in the coal industry as an electrician and continued to as a part-timer at Nantgarw Colliery for part of the time he played for us.

He became a regular goal-scorer for Cardiff and was transferred to Aston Villa in December 1957 for a then record incoming fee of £22,000. Gerry became an England international, and as a result joined Inter Milan with great success. He played for several other Italian clubs and finished his career with Worcester City and then Merthyr.

Gerry died at the age of 48 in April 1983 whilst playing in a charity match at Mold, and his story has been written by Midlands author Simon Goodyear.

The three ex-Bluebirds will be pleased to meet current City supporters and tell them of their experiences with Cardiff City. Also present will be the author, and several members of the Hitchens family.
