BURKEY AIMS TO BASH BORO

Posted on: Fri 05 Mar 2010

Chris Burke has called for a repeat of Cardiff City's victory over Middlesbrough earlier this season, saying: "We must show our fans what we can do."

The sides clash at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday with Boro seeking revenge for the Bluebirds' win at the Riverside in December, when Burkey scored the only goal.

Wing wizard Burke said: "We've been disappointing in the last couple of weeks but morale is the same as always. We stick together, win lose or draw. We have to pick ourselves up. To get ourselves out of this we have to look at ourselves and see what we can do better.

"The manager was disappointed at the manner in which we lost the game at Preston last Saturday. He had harsh words about our performance and as players we should be doing better on the pitch. The manager knows we're better than that and on Saturday we must shows the fans what we can do. We're not playing well but we must make sure we perform to the highest of our capabilities.

"I've heard something about a planned demonstration on Saturday, but the fans have always been behind us this season. The players just concentrate on what's happening on the pitch. The fans will be disappointed that things haven't gone our way in recent weeks but the best way to get out of this position is to work together and our fans can be the twelfth man and get behind us."

Championship top scorer Peter Whittingham is out of the Boro match with a torn groin muscle, and Burkey said: "He will be a massive loss but it will be an opportunity for somebody else to step in and show what they can offer to the team.

"Whitts is top scorer in the Championship and has great talent and natural ability. It's one thing for a midfielder to get goals, but to spend most of the season out on the left wing and get goals from there is remarkable. And don't forget he's been chipping in with assists.

"Talking of goals, I'm aiming for double figures this season. We got a great result at Middlesbrough but they're an excellent team coming here on a good run of form and Gordon Strachan has signed some quality players in the January window. We have to make sure we match them in every department."
