GABOR, KEV IN FITNESS RACE

Posted on: Mon 15 Mar 2010

Cardiff City defenders Gabor Gyepes and Kevin McNaughton face a race to be fit for Tuesday's Championship clash at Coventry.

Manager David Jones revealed he would make a late decision on Gyepes (back) and McNaughton (thigh) as the sixth-placed Bluebirds prepared to take on Chris Coleman's Sky Blues.

Dave said: "We are waiting on Gabor and on Kevin McNaughton and we won't know until the physios have had a good look at them. Everybody came through Saturday OK except Kevin, but fingers crossed he should be all right.

"The exact phrase Kevin used was 'My thigh's in bits,' and I don't know what the means, but if the physios can get into it and there's no pull and no strain, he should be OK.

"Gabor saw the back specialist on Friday, so they've been working away on him over the weekend. He'll be back in this morning, we'll have a look at him and hopefully he'll travel with us."

Coventry will be Cardiff's third away match in eight days after defeats at Ipswich and Leicester, and Dave said: "Only one win in six games makes it's a worrying time for us, but you've got to look at what we've been going through.

"You can make the stats look as bad as you want or as good as you want. We went to Bristol City and won by six, we went to Watford and won by four, we went up to Middlesbrough and beat them, we went to West Brom and won.

"If you put it all into context over the season, we don't have a bad away record. Should we have got more draws? Probably. It's a matter of turning those defeats into draws and those draws into wins. But when you've missed the players we've missed and the quality of those players, I'd defy any team to go and bang on week in, week out.

"We've been hanging in there and it's a great credit to the players here. We've played players out of position, we have played people in too many games, especially the youngsters who need to come out for a rest, but they've all taken their turn. I hope now that we've got senior players back, we can look to them to turn it on.

"We're still up there, we're still fighting so we must have done something right along the way. All the so-called experts know how they think it should be done and how we should go about it, but we're still there, whether it be by luck or by sheer grit and determination.

"This is a big, big month for us, and we must make sure we get as many as we can fit and we get back to winning ways, home and away. If we can find that sharpness, and find it quickly, then we'll fly."
