DAVE: PRESSURE STILL ON US

Posted on: Fri 23 Apr 2010

Dave Jones has warned his Cardiff City players that the pressure is still on them, despite the club's success in reaching the play-offs.

The Bluebirds play their last home match of the regular league programme at the Stadium tomorrow, with relegation-threatened Sheffield Wednesday the visitors.

Manager Dave emphasised that he wants to see City, now lying fourth, finish the season in third place.

He said: "We're two points behind Forest with two games to play, so third spot is achievable. The only way now is to keep the momentum going.

"We want to finish as high as we can and keep a winning attitude. There are places up for grabs. It's down to the players now to maintain the mentality to keep it going.

"Take your foot off the gas and you've got to turn it back on again. There might not be anything there when you put your foot down. Why take that risk? I hope the players who don't play will push the others really hard. Competition is the healthiest thing to have at a football club, and if we've got that, we should be all right."

Dave also brushed aside suggestions that City should fear possible opponents in the play-offs. "If it's your year and your time it doesn't matter who you play.

"We're not frightened of anybody. If we get to the play-offs why be fearful? We never have been frightened of anybody, so whoever gets there you've got to play them anyway. Why get there and be fearful?

"But I'd rather talk about the match against Sheffield Wednesday than a lot of ifs and buts.

"Wednesday know they need maximum points because Palace, who are also struggling, play on Monday, and they'll have an idea of what they have to do.

"But it will still go to the last game unless we beat Wednesday and Palace win. In that case, it would be all done and dusted.

"Wednesday have got to get something from the game so they'll come and attack. People say we're not under pressure, but we are because we're trying to chase down third. We'll be at full pelt.

"I said to the players yesterday that if I see anybody take their foot off the gas, then why are we giving them the opportunity of stating a claim for a play-off spot?

"As far as I am concerned, all places are up for grabs as they have been all season. I don't see why I should change that attitude now. We've worked really hard to get to where we want to be.

"Hopefully there'll be a full house and we deserve that. It's going to be a fantastic day for our supporters with a lot of noise, but they'll also expect a result.

"It's no good them changing their attitude because we're in the play-offs because in two games time, the expectation level will go up again.

"I hope it's a great day for everybody. The sun should be shining and there'll be a good party atmosphere, but the fans will want us to put a result in.

"I hope no-one runs on the pitch because there's not much grass on it and I don't want what's left to be taken off. I'd be grateful if the fans do all their partying around the pitch and not on it!"

Dave also revealed that Solomon Taiwo is due to have an operation on his hip, and will miss the play-offs.
