BREWERS IN TOWN FOR CARLING CUP

Posted on: Thu 12 Aug 2010

Cardiff City opened their 2010/2011 npower Championship season with a hard-fought point against Sheffield United at the weekend. The Bluebirds are back in action at Cardiff City Stadium on Wednesday, when League Two Burton Albion visit for a Carling Cup first round tie (kick-off 7.45pm). Simon Glanville previews the match.

Cardiff team news: Dave Jones has confirmed that Tom Heaton will start in goal against the Brewers. David Marshall was due to feature in the Scotland squad this week, but pulled out with a slight elbow injury. Darcy Blake is also on international duty with John Toshack's Welsh setup and will also miss out on Wednesday, whilst Kevin McNaughton is unlikely to play following a knock picked up against Sheffield United. New loan signings Jason Koumas and Seyi Olofinjana are unlikely to feature after recently joining the club.

Burton team news: Paul Peschisolido will have a number of new faces in his Burton squad on Wednesday night. Summer signings Darren Moore, Adam Bolder, Lewis Young, Nathan Stanton, James Ellison, Garyn Breen, Jack Dyer and Adam Legzdins are all in contention to be involved at Cardiff City Stadium.

Burton last season: Burton are relative newcomers to the Football League and the Carling Cup, after securing promotion to League Two from the Blue Square Conference just over a year ago. During their promotion season they lost the services of former manager Nigel Clough, who left for his current club and our next Championship opponents, Derby County.

Peschisolido was named as the man to replace Clough, and he led the Brewers to a very respectable thirteenth place finish in their debut League Two season. They didn't fare too well in the Carling Cup last year though, losing to Championship side Reading 5-1 in the opening round.

Burton last time out: Like 'City, Burton had to settle for a point in their opening league match of the season. The League Two side faced newly promoted Oxford United at their Pirelli Stadium, but the game ended as a goalless stalemate after neither side could find a breakthrough.

Burton Albion side against Oxford United: Legzdins, Boertien, Moore, Webster, Corbett, Penn, Simpson, Bolder (Maghoma 68), McGrath, Pearson, Harrad (Young 67). Subs not used: Poole, James, Walker, Phillips, Ellison.

Trivia: Wednesday night's Carling Cup tie will be the first time Cardiff City and Burton Albion have met in a competitive fixture.
