DAVE IN DEPTH: PART TWO

In our second part of the Dave Jones interview, the City boss moves on to discuss our Canada preparations, his idea onto how the trip will go and the opposition that the Whitecaps, Sounders and others will provide us. He also talks further on his transfer activity progress including Jason Koumas and what he wants to do with his squad by the time we board the plane.

Read now, where Dave discusses the first days back in training, fitness tests and how his new players so far have settled in.
How are the preparations going for Canada? Do you know what's happening as soon as we land or is it a case of getting there and running with whatever is in front of us?
No, it's a little bit better planned than that! Everything that we've got to do is all written down. We've had the full itinerary sent through and we've had long discussions with the Vancouver Whitecaps - what we should be doing and what our needs are.

We've changed one of the hotels already because of the location and we're looking at all different aspects. We're not going to get over there and just see what happens on a daily basis. It's every day planned within the whole trip.
Within the training programme you do play it by ear, because if you're looking a little more tired than you'd expect or you think you need a bit more you've got the facilities to add into it. We've got it down at the moment as training twice a day. We'll keep it there, but if it only needs to be once, then we can change that.

The programme is pretty much well and truly set and I think everybody is looking forward to going over there. I've spoken with one of the directors at the Vancouver Whitecaps and they're all really looking forward to having us over there also.
The Sounders and Whitecaps are both well into their season now and as Sunderland found out last year, they'll provide us a tough test. It's not an easy ride and a guaranteed bunch of games won is it?
Yeah, that's right. Everton are going over there this year as well as ourselves. They're going over to the USA and while we're just outside we're going into America to play Seattle. Teams in the past have played them and we've just seen the World Cup with certain players from their leagues, so it's not an easy time to play them.

It's also nice during pre-season to go away and not just be stuck out there in the wilderness. The players do need something to do, so a bit of sight seeing after we've done our training in the late afternoon will be good for them. It means that they're not going to be bored and we've got lots of things set up for them. As I said, we've got it al very well planned out and we're all looking forward to it.
Closer to home, we know that you never discuss transfer speculation, but everyone is asking just the same. Can you tell us how things are moving, in particular with Jason Koumas and the possibility of his return?
As far as Jason is concerned all I can say is that it's ongoing. We're trying to bring in players and at the moment we've had a little flurry with the three players all coming in. Now the process is a little bit more drip-fed as everyone is now back in the Championship and the Football League.
What's happening now is that everybody is probably taking stock; everone is asking 'Who do we need, who can we get rid of?' At the moment we do still need to move players to enable us to bring players in. I suppose that this time of the year is what you would have to call the silly month really, with everyone basically trying to get players in while we're all chasing the same pot of gold.

You'll no doubt shoot me down in flames now and say 'six hundred' to the following question, but how many new players would you ideally like to see added to the team before it's time to hand in the passports and board the plane to Canada?
No, you're ok. So far, we've been lucky and have got the three or four new players in already. Hopefully now we'll get to bring in another three or four.
I want to have a full squad available and want to take eighteen players, possibly twenty players away with us, all of them eligible to be playing in the first team on a regular basis.
