Stephen McPhail has joined Dave Jones and Peter Whittingham by confirming a need for Cardiff City to continue from where we left off at St Mary's on Tuesday night.

"We started sloppy at Southampton - actually we didn't get started too badly, but we gave away two sloppy goals," he admitted". "But then we pulled ourselves out of it and everyone knows that we could have won it at the end.

"We were chasing the game at two nil, and we said at half time that we just had to lift it and show our belief. In the second half the character, determination and belief we showed was magnificent. We put it to them - we knew that we had to and knew that if we could get that first goal it would make them a little nervous. Then we got the second and from there we looked like we were going to be the winners".

The match on Tuesday will be remembered for a well taken goal from each team - although McPhail confirmed that our Cardiff City shot-stopper was annoyed with conceding the long distance smash from Baird.

He said, "I know that Neil was disappointed not to have saved the first one as it flew above his head. We looked at it on the TV at half time and it was one of those that went past him before he noticed or had time to react. To get back into it and then their 'keeper makes two terrific saves, especially from Chops - we were unlucky to have not come away from there with three points".

From a Cardiff scoring perspective McPhail was happier, saying, "Thommo needed that. He's been working his socks off and Chops has been taking the rewards; but it was great to see Thommo walk onto the pitch and then slip it into the net. And we all know that it's always good for strikers to get goals.

"For our equalising goal we all know that Peter has got a super left foot. He sees the ball really early and he gets away some super strikes on goal. His goal was one that was worthy to win any game, but we could only take a point. I thought we should have won it because we were full of running and full of belief, but we'll take the point. A few teams around us dropped some points so maybe that point will be vital at the end.

"We've got to go to Derby on Saturday and aim to start the way we finished at Southampton. If we do that I'm sure we're more than capable of giving them a game. We're all looking forward to going up there and putting in a performance".
