Beginning his career at Leeds United as a trainee, Stephen became a full professional in December 1996. He made 107 senior appearances for them, and had loan-spells with Millwall and Nottingham Forest. In July 2004 he moved to Barnsley and was a regular with them until joining Cardiff City on a free transfer in July 2006. He has played for the Republic of Ireland at Youth, Under-21, B and Senior levels.
