Steve began his senior career with Dundee United whom he joined in 1996. He spent seven years at Tannadice Park, establishing himself as a consistent goalscorer as well as gaining International honours for Scotland. He moved to Rangers in 2003, but spent most of his on the bench and joined Cardiff City for £200,000 in January 2006, scoring twice on his Bluebirds debut against Burnley. Steve was City's first signing from Rangers since full-back Bob Calder in August 1933. Last season Steve made 45 Championship and Cup appearances, scoring six times. The start of his 2007/08 season was disrupted because of a summer groin injury that required an operation which was expected to keep him out of action for several months.
