ROGER JOHNSON: CENTRAL DEFENDER

It was in mid-July that Ashford-born Roger joined Cardiff City from Wycombe Wanderers for a fee of £275,000 and he had no problem in adapting to Championship football from the lower divisions, sharing a central central-defensive role in his first season with either Darren Purse or Glenn Loovens. He had originally joined Wycombe as a trainee and became a full professional in July 2001. He made 183 League and Cup appearances for Wycombe, scoring 22 goals for them. He frequently caused problems for opposing defences a set-pieces, and often moved into attack in the closing stages of matches if required. Last season he was a regular for Cardiff City, missing only three Championship games and playing in all of City's Carling Cup and F.A. Cup matches. He scored 7 League and Cup goals in 2007/08 including the one that sealed a 2-0 victory at Premiership Middlesbrough in the Sixth round of the F.A. Cup.
