Match Preview: Cardiff City vs. Bristol City

The Bluebirds return to CCS for the Severnside Derby…

23 February 2018

Cardiff City welcome play-off hopefuls Bristol City to the Welsh capital on Sunday for the 92nd Severnside Derby.

Lee Johnson’s side make the trip across the bridge following their 1-1 draw with Fulham on Wednesday evening, seeing them remain in sixth place in the Sky Bet Championship.

What to expect from the Robins…

Occupying that final play-off spot, Bristol City are two points clear of Sheffield United in seventh and have played out three consecutive draws in recent fixtures against Sunderland, Leeds United and the Cottagers.

Bobby Reid netted his 16th goal of the season on Wednesday evening, and has also engineered five assists thus far. The 25 year-old has been a successful academy graduate for the Robins, appearing on 39 occasions in all competitions this season.

Summer signing Famara Diédhiou has reached double figures for this campaign with ten goals in his first season in English football. The Senegalese international’s most recent strike came in their 2-2 draw with Leeds United.

In the hot seat…

At the age of 36, Johnson is already in his third managerial job since retiring from playing in 2013.

Starting out with Oldham Athletic, the former Robins midfielder was the youngest manager in the Football League at the time and guided the Latics to League One safety at the end of the 2012/13 season.

He then made the move to Oakwell in 2015 and spent a year with Barnsley before being appointed Bristol City boss in February 2016.

Previous meetings…

The last meeting between the two sides at Cardiff City Stadium was Neil Warnock’s first game at the helm, and he masterminded a 2-1 victory with goals from Peter Whittingham and then debutant Sol Bamba.

The Robins recorded a victory over ten-man City at Ashton Gate this season, but the Bluebirds went on a five-game unbeaten run against Sunday’s opponents between 2013 and last season. Including our triumph at CCS, City won four and drew the other over a four year period.

Club connections…

Lee Tomlin joined the Bluebirds from Bristol City in the summer, making 16 league appearances for City before moving to Nottingham Forest on loan in January.

Former Bluebird Gary O’Neil is also currently on the Bristol City roster. The 34 year-old made nine appearances and scored once for City during a loan spell from Portsmouth in 2004.

Other players to wear the jerseys for both sides include Adam Matthews, Tom Heaton, Nicky Maynard and Jay Emmanuel Thomas.

Match Report: Cardiff City 1-0 Bristol City

City take the Severnside spoils with a fourth consecutive win…

25 February 2018

Cardiff City defeated Bristol City 1-0 in the Severnside Derby at Cardiff City Stadium – taking Neil Warnock's men six points off top and four clear of third place.

City made five changes to the side that defeated Ipswich Town last time out, with Joe Bennett, Liam Feeney, Greg Halford, Callum Paterson, and Gary Madine coming into the starting eleven.

The Bluebirds’ first opportunity came after six minutes from a Junior Hoilett free-kick. The Canadian international whipped the set-piece into the area and Madine connected, heading agonisingly over the crossbar – the 27-year-old coming close to scoring his first City goal on his home debut.

Warnock’s men weren’t far off again when Feeney broke down the right flank. The 31-year-old delivered a cross for Paterson, who flicked it onto Madine, and his shot was blocked. The ball arrived at the feet of Joe Ralls, who hammered an effort towards goal that was deflected wide for a corner. Sol Bamba couldn’t direct his header on target from the resulting set-piece.

The home side were dominant, and not long later Bamba played a terrific through-ball from central midfield to send Feeney through on goal. The winger was forced into a first-time attempt due to pressure from the covering defender, and the diving Frank Fielding kept him out. Halford also saw a strong effort on target smothered by the 'keeper before the half-time whistle blew.

After the interval, it took Cardiff City seven minutes to come close to breaking the deadlock once more. The newly introduced Kenneth Zohore took advantage of weakness in the Bristol City defence, showing his pace to burst clear, before his powerful delivery was almost diverted into the net by Korey Smith.

On the hour mark, Paterson was next to try his luck. Ralls’ delivery from the left wing was flicked on by Zohore from just outside the six-yard box, and the Scotland international volleyed onto the roof of the net.

A deflected effort from Famara Diédhiou and a crucial Bamba intervention were as close as the visitors came to a goal in the second half - the City back line in a miserly mood as they looked for their fourth consecutive clean sheet.

The Bluebirds’ domination finally paid off after 82 minutes, as Zohore opened the scoring. Ralls broke past two defenders and drove a low ball into the area towards Paterson – his strike was parried, and big Ken made sure to finish on the follow-up from close range.

The Bluebirds’ late goal and resilience secured a crucial victory on Severnside Derby day. The three points mean that Warnock’s men go four points clear of third-place Aston Villa, and six points behind table-toppers Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Sky Bet Championship – 12 games remain.
