“We knew that we had a really tough month ahead of us coming into the festive period, but we’ve applied ourselves the way that the manager expects us to – and we’ve been delighted with the results,” said Kers.

“I thought we started exceptionally well today. In the first 25 minutes we came out at a really high tempo and got the goal early. They’re a decent team, and a hard team to break down, and they got themselves back into it. They have only lost 3 in their last 18 – so they’re certainly no pushover. But towards the end we started to keep the ball a little bit better than we had done at the start of the second half, and I think we saw the game out really well.

“We’ve got a huge amount of options now, whereas we probably didn’t have the same strength in depth last year. For example we brought on Heidar Helguson for Gestede, and Don Cowie came on for Noone – we didn’t feel that we could do that last year, so the squad certainly has a lot of strength to it now.

“We’re taking it one game at a time. We’re going along really nicely at the moment. We train hard down at the Vale every day, with a lot of rest and recovery involved as well due to the amount of games at the moment. Now this game is finished, we’ll have some rest and recovery tomorrow, and we’ll prepare as we always do for the Birmingham game.”
