CONNOLLY: A HARD VICTORY

Club News

The City defender has netted four times this season.

Match-winner Matt Connolly praised his team-mates for their gritty win over Middlesbrough on Saturday.

"It was about time we won a game like that," said Matt. "We had our backs to the walls and sometimes you have to just sit in. I thought Middlesbrough played well today; they are a very good team with good technical players. We made changes and we dug in and won the game.

"The year I went up with QPR we won countless games like that. We would catch teams on the break or score goals early then just sit in and defend. It is another three points, there is a long way to go but sometimes you have to win games like that.

"A few of the goals I have scored have been at the back post. Whittingham puts it in with great quality and it is hard for the goalkeeper and the defenders to defend against it. I kind of just edge towards the back post and it has worked out for me so far.

"I think (Whittingham) has got one hell of a left foot and he can just do what he wants. I caught the flight early and I knew with his delivery it was going to be right on the goalkeeper or towards the back post.

"I thought physically it was a hard game, concentration as well; like I said they are a very good team, but a lot of teams come here and give us a test. We got three points and that is all you can get.

"(Cardiff City Stadium) is a tough place to come, I have played here for opposition teams myself. The fans have been tremendous and I think teams are coming here now scared of us. We need to keep getting wins here. It is a fortress, we have won nine and we want to win the tenth, eleventh and twelfth so it is important for us to carry on."
