City's Development squad win opener at Portman Road

Cardiff City’s development side opened their season with a 2-0 win away at Ipswich Town on Monday night.

Cooper’s men visited Town in their first away encounter for a second campaign on the trot with City’s young side looking to avenge the 6-0 defeat from last term. The first goal came in somewhat fortuitous circumstances with the ball cannoning off Cardiff striker Etien Velikonja before flying into the back of the Ipswich Town goal to give the away side an advantage after nineteen minutes.

The Welsh Capital side took full control of the match in the opening half and they grabbed a crucial second goal just before half time. Former Connah’s Quay forward Rhys Healey met a fine cross to head Cardiff into a two goal advantage with the half time whistle just moments away.

The home side came back into the game after the break, forward Jack Marriott bagged a hat-trick against City U18 as well as Swansea City’s U18 team last term but this time the strikers shot flew back off the crossbar with new City keeper Moore beaten. Kadeem Harris was unfortunate not to add to his fine pre-season form late in the half but his low shot was somehow turned around the post by Town keeper Crowe.

It was a fine first display of the season by Kevin Cooper’s side who will look to continue this impressive start in the campaigns second game at Crystal Palace on Tuesday 3rd September – 7pm kick-off at Selhurst Park.
