City forward pleased with goal v Athletic Club

Fraizer Campbell spoke to the press after his goal gave Cardiff City a 2 – 1 win over Athletic Bilbao in their final pre-season fixture of the summer.

City’s free-scoring forward was clearly delighted with the display his side put in at CCS against opposition of the highest pedigree, saying:

“Bilbao are a great European side and we knew exactly what to expect from them. It was always going to be a tough day today but the lads stuck up to them well and put in a great performance.

“The lads are all peaking at the right time going in to the West Ham game. I felt great today and I think it showed that we all felt good out there on the pitch.

“It’s always nice to get a bit of practice in scoring goals before the season starts, too. Hopefully I can carry that on from now and into the start of the season.”

Malky Mackay’s recruitment process for the season to come is still in full swing, but Fraizer was quick to compliment his current Cardiff teammates, including some of the recent acquisitions who have brought even more competition to the City ranks.

“It’s always good to have competition for places," said Campbell, "The other strikers at the club are all brilliant players. We’ve got Nicky Maynard, Andreas Cornelius and Joe Mason and hopefully we can take it in turns throughout the season to all do well for Cardiff.

“Last season we did brilliantly but we can’t rest on our laurels. We’ve got to all increase our standards to nail a spot down because everyone in the squad wants to play in the Premier League. It’s going to be tough but hopefully the manager will have some difficult decisions to make as that will mean that everyone is working hard to get their spot.”

We now stand on the threshold of the Bluebirds’ first foray into the top flight in over half a century, and Fraizer is understandably desperate to get things started, although he was quick to remind everyone that a difficult campaign lies ahead, adding: "We’re all looking forward to playing in the Premier League. It’s all fresh, it’s all exciting and we just can’t wait to get it all started.

“It’s going to be difficult though and we’ll be up against it for the majority of the games this season – but that’s what we expect. Come the end of the season hopefully we’ll still be in the league and we’ll take it from there. But if we take each game as it comes and work hard as a team I’m sure that we will get the results we deserve.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity to be part of such a good team and good set of lads and hopefully we can all have a crack at the Premier League together and do well.”
