Win over holders Spain sees Medel and Chile progress to next round

City’s Gary Medel and Chile secured their place in the next phase of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil after a stunning 2-0 victory over Spain at the Maracana.

Playing the full 90 minutes at the heart of the Chilean defence, as first-half goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz was enough to secure victory over the current World Cup holders, a result that also saw Spain’s exit from the competition confirmed.

Chile’s first competitive victory over the Spanish in 11 matches, La Roja now have a second round tie against either the winners or runners-up in Group A with their final match against the Netherlands, also on six points after victory over Australia, set to decide their finishing spot in Group B on June 23rd in Sao Paolo.

Cardiff City’s other representative in Brazil, Kim Bo Kyung will hope to boost his and Korea Republic’s chances of joining Gary in the second phase of the competition as they take on Algeria in their second Group H game in Porto Alegre on Sunday 22nd June.
