FAYC4 REPORT: BURNLEY 3-1 CARDIFF

Club News

Cardiff City Football Club's U18 side bowed out of this season's FA Youth Cup, with Burnley progressing to face Nottingham Forest in the Fifth Round following a 3-1 victory at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening.

The hosts went in at the break with a one goal advantage following a late Brandon Wilson strike, driving home from the edge of the penalty area on 42 minutes.

The Bluebirds made two half time changes with Eli Phipps and Jamie Veale entering the field of play, and this almost paid off in just two minutes as forward Phipps met Veale's corner kick, heading inches wide of goal. Matthew Bloxham and Jarred Harvey's young squad fought hard for an equaliser in the second period, but were caught on the counter with a Clarets substitute adding a clinical finishing touch on 73 minutes.

Jamie Frost entered the field of play after 66 minutes, and it took him just seven minutes to add the finishing touch to a fine counter attacking move. The Bluebirds were back in it with eight minutes remaining as Jamie Veale added his second goal of the tournament. After stunning the crowd at the Valley with a 25 yard in the past round, Veale stepped up to curl home a delightful free kick from a similar distance to give the young City stars hope.

While Cardiff pushed for an equaliser, it somewhat left them susceptible on the counter with goalkeeper Joe Massaro pulling off a wonder save to keep Bloxham and Harvey's side in the tie on 84 minutes, denying Andreas Bianga from close range. Massaro impressive throughout this tie with a number of outstanding stops.

As City once again packed the Burnley penalty area, the Clarets used their counter attacking pace to score a third goal. Bradley Jackson with an impressive strike to seal victory and a fifth round spot for the hosts.
