10 | FAMOUS NUMBER TENS

Last month, it was revealed that Lex Immers will wear Cardiff City’s number 10 shirt for the upcoming season.

Having worn the 27 jersey during his loan spell last term, Lex has returned to the number he previously occupied at Feyenoord.

The number 10 jersey has had special significance at Cardiff City, with a host of famous players gracing the number over the years. Here, we take a look back at some of the stars who have pulled on the shirts since the emergence of fixed squad numbers in the 1990s…

STEVEN McPHAIL

After joining the Bluebirds from Barnsley in 2006, Irishman Steven McPhail was instantly handed the number 10 jersey, and became a vital member of the Bluebirds midfield.

A play-making central midfielder, McPhail helped City push for promotion in the early stages of the season, eventually featuring in forty-three league games. After being handed the armband in the absence of Darren Purse, McPhail scored his first Cardiff goal in October 2007. Having featured in five FA Cup matches, Macca had the honour of leading the Bluebirds out in the 2008 FA Cup Semi Final and Final.

McPhail continued to star for the Bluebirds in the following campaigns, while the latter stages of his City career were curtailed by illness. The Irishman left Cardiff in 2013, having made over 200 appearances for the Club.

ROBERT EARNSHAW

Cardiff City’s second highest all-time goal-scorer – Robert Earnshaw graduated from the Bluebirds' youth ranks in 1998.

He burst onto the scene in 2000, with twenty-five goals in the 2000/01 season. Then, in 2002/03, the number ten broke a major Cardiff record, scoring thirty-five goals in all competitions – the most by a Bluebird in a single season.

Earnie’s goals helped Cardiff win promotion to Division Two, while another twenty League goals the following season saw him join Premier League team West Bromwich Albion. After moves to Norwich, Derby and NottinghamForest, Earnshaw re-joined the Bluebirds in 2011. In his second spell he hit the back of the net four times, before spells in Israel and the MLS. In total, Earnie scored 109 goals in 217 Cardiff City matches.

FRAIZER CAMPBELL

A 2013 January signing from Sunderland, Fraizer Campbell added the final element to our promotion winning side, scoring seven important goals in twelve games.

Like Immers, Campbell also wore the number 27 to start his City career, before switching to 10. In the Premier League, Fraizer found the net six times, as well as adding three Cup strikes.

His most famous goals in the Cardiff shirt undoubtedly came in the historic 3-2 win over eventual Premier League champions Manchester City in August 2013.

NATHAN BLAKE

Nathan Blake joined the club in 1990, and broke into the first team during the 1990/91 season. After becoming a key member of the team, the front man scored eleven times in 1992/93, as the Bluebirds gained promotion from the Third Division.

In the follow season, while sporting the famous number 10 shirt, a certain goal against Manchester City ensured Blake’s name would be forever etched into Cardiff folklore.

The fantastic curled effort dumped the Premier League team out of the FA Cup, and ignited interest in the Welsh forward, who would go on to join Sheffield United in 1994, having scored forty goals for the Bluebirds.
