Cardiff City’s U23 development side returned to South Wales with all three points on Monday, 24th October, defeating Gerard Nash’s Ipswich Town, 1-0, at Portman Road.

The young Bluebirds faced a strong Ipswich team with Welsh international Jonny Williams and veteran striker Luke Varney both starting the match for the Tractor Boys.

Despite this, it was City who dominated large parts of the game. The breakthrough and only goal of the match came on 63 minutes as Eli Phipps benefitted from excellent work by Marco Weymans and Tommy O’Sullivan to score the goal that would seal a crucial away win for Cardiff.

Following the match, U23 manager Kevin Nicholson gave his thoughts about the performance of the young Bluebirds, saying: “Our aim heading into this game was to produce a performance to be proud of and the boys certainly delivered that.

“We played with an impressive tempo and intensity with and without the ball, attacked with purpose and defended with solidarity. Every player knew their job and played their part. We’re delighted with the win."
