Done Deal | Alex Smithies signs for the Bluebirds

Club News

Cardiff City Football Club are delighted to confirm the signing of goalkeeper, Alex Smithies, subject to international clearance.

The 28-year-old joins the Bluebirds from QPR for an undisclosed fee, signing a deal at Cardiff City Stadium that runs until the summer of 2022.

A former England youth international, Smithies began his professional career with his hometown side, Huddersfield Town, for whom he made a total of 275 appearances.

He tasted promotion to the Championship with the Terriers in 2012, notably scoring the winning penalty in their League One Play-Off Final shootout victory over Sheffield United at Wembley.

Alex moved on to QPR in August 2015 and would pull on their shirt 109 times, winning the Hoops’ Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Season awards in 2016/17.

With the ink drying on Alex's contract, Neil Warnock spoke of his delight to have signed the highly rated 'keeper.

“I wondered if he just has a blinder when he plays against us," said the Gaffer. "But having watched Alex for a while, there is no doubting his pedigree.

“He’s a lad that knows he will have to fight for his place. Neil Etheridge had a fabulous season in 2017/18 and improved as time went on. It’s great for us to have that healthy competition.”
