U23 Report: Millwall 0-1 Cardiff City

Academy

Cardiff City’s U23 side earned a 1-0 victory following a resilient display on the road. Captain Lloyd Humphries scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, midway through the first half.

Recent signings Aaron Bolger and Danny Williams both made their first starts for the club after appearing as substitutes in their debuts last time out.

Kevin Nugent named an experienced side to face the Bluebirds. This includes former Cardiff City ‘keeper Ben Amos.

The first opportunity of the match came the visitors' way after 18 minutes. Daniel Martin did brilliantly to dribble past Jiri Skalak on the left before crossing high into the box. His pinpoint delivery was met by Ben Margetson who directed his powerful header narrowly wide of the far post.

City almost broke the deadlock with 24 minutes played. Martin played another smart delivery into the area which met Daniel Griffiths. The striker saw his strike blocked into the path of Bolger who also had his low shot cleared by the Lions defence.

A minute later, persistent pressure paid off for the visitors when they were awarded a penalty. Laurence Wootton was brought down inside the area before Humphries kept his composure to fire City ahead.

The Bluebirds almost extended their lead six minutes after the restart. However, Martin saw a 15 yard shot from a wide angle blocked following a neat lay-off from Griffiths.

Millwall failed to produce clear cut chances throughout the game, due to a resilient Bluebirds back-line. This was tested when they had their closest opportunity of levelling the game in the closing stages. A lengthy scramble inside the box led to the ball being fired narrowly wide of Matt Hall’s far post to keep City ahead.

The travelling side then held on to earn a deserved victory; their first of 2019. The U23 side will host Queens Park Rangers in their next league outing on Monday, 25th March 2019 – 1pm kick-off.
