The Bluebirds will be looking to make it four home wins on the spin against the Magpies, who won promotion to the Premier League against Preston North End on Monday.

THE OPPOSITION

Newcastle United, managed by Rafa Benítez, arrive in the Welsh capital still in with a chance of winning the Championship title. The Magpies are four points behind league-leaders Brighton & Hove Albion with two games to play.

United needed a win on Monday against Preston to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt and they clinched the result in style, running out 4-1 winners in front of their home fans.

A double from Ayoze Pérez, combined with a Christian Atsu strike and a Matt Ritchie penalty put Benítez’s men out of sight. The Lilywhites did make it 1-1 through Jordan Hugill but their cause was hampered in the second half due to the dismissal of Paul Gallagher.

The Magpies are bringing a large away following to Cardiff City Stadium but look set to be without their top scorer Dwight Gayle. The striker has scored 22 goals this season but has missed Newcastle’s last three games, due to a hamstring injury picked up against Sheffield Wednesday.

CLUB CONNECTIONS

Michael Chopra made his Newcastle debut in 2002 and spent six years on the books of his hometown club. After leaving the Magpies he would go on to have two permanent spells with the Bluebirds, first in the 2006/07 season when he finished as the club’s top scorer with 22 goals.

Chopra returned to South Wales for the Bluebirds’ first campaign at Cardiff City Stadium and took his tally for the club to over 50 goals during the next two seasons.

Other players to represent both the Magpies and the Bluebirds include Wayne Routledge, Craig Bellamy, Haris Vučkić and the late Wales international, Ivor Allchurch.

MEMORABLE MEETING

Cardiff City welcomed Newcastle United to Ninian Park on 22 August 1956 for their first home match of the 1956/57 Division One season.

The Bluebirds, managed by Trevor Morris, had begun the campaign away to Arsenal and returned from Highbury with a point after a 0-0 draw. They played the Magpies in midweek, a few days later, and the game could not have been more different, with City running out 5-2 winners.

Johnny McSeveney got himself on the score-sheet and pair of braces from forwards Trevor Ford and Cliff Nugent completed the rout.

Welshman Reg Davies got the two goals for the Magpies but Cardiff still won the game handsomely.
