Malky Mackay's men have now taken four out of a possible six points against the two clubs that finished first and second in last year's Barclays Premier League.

“I thought the first half was one of the most complete performances of the season so far,” Malky told press after the final whistle. “The belief and way we played against last year's Champions was superb; I'm delighted with the performance from the first minute to the last.

“I was really disappointed for the team to concede in the last minute of the first half, because of the way we had played; but the goal at the end was thoroughly deserving of the performance overall and the chances we had.

“I thought overall [Referee] Mr. Swarbrick had a good game and I think he handled it well. Two teams out there were tough, committed and there were some tasty challenges throughout the whole game. I think his overall handling of the game was good though.”

When questioned as to whether he though David Moyes' United side had under-estimated the Bluebirds, the Manager was resolute in his response, saying: “David Moyes does not underestimate anyone.

"Manchester United knew they were playing a team that is committed and determined and we knew we were playing the Champions.

We've shown that we can compete at this level and compete well.

"I take the work ethic as a given, they have to have technique and they have to have talent. They have to be able to play and throughout the whole game the belief was shown. Their ability to play at this level was immense.

“There were big performances by everyone out there today – I wouldn't want to pick out any one player in particular. Ben Turner and Steven Caulker at the back were sublime, our full-backs were immense and our goalkeeper was calm. Campbell, Whittingham, Caulker and Turner through the spine of the team are examples of the young English talent that we have playing at Premier League level now.”
