Cardiff City Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Chairman Mehmet Dalman spoke of their respect and admiration for Craig Bellamy on Thursday night following the former Welsh international’s decision to hang up his boots.

“I’d like to place on record my thanks to Craig for his outstanding contribution to Cardiff City, including his efforts during the months I’ve been at the club,” Ole said. “As a player he kept to his word to come back to South Wales to help get his beloved club promoted to the Premier League, which I know means a great deal to every Cardiff City supporter.

“I know from my own personal experience as a player how the last couple of years, the final months especially can take their toll on a footballer’s body. Craig has taken some time to reflect and consider his future as a player and has made his decision to retire from the game, which we all fully respect.

“He’s someone I very much enjoyed working with and along with everyone associated with the club, I wish him every success for the future.”

Mehmet added, “Craig is a legend. We are all grateful to him for his loyalty, dedication and true grit determination. Cardiff City and the world of football will be poorer without him on the pitch. Our thanks and good wishes go to him in his new challenge. He will always give one hundred percent.”
