U18s BEGIN CAMPAIGN WITH DEFEAT

Club News

Cardiff City’s U18’s started their league season with a 2-1 away defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The early periods of the game were contested in a slow manner with both sides looking to stay strong in this opening match of the 2012/13 season and it was the home side that stuck first just before the half hour mark. George Cousins capitalised on a lack of concentration in the City defence and neatly rounded Liam Matthews before tapping home.

Strikes from Kane Owen and Jaye Bowen troubled home goalkeeper Colquhoun, but it was the Seagulls that scored next doubling their advantage in the process. Jack Shonk stepped up and fired home a fantastic low free kick from the edge of the area that left Matthews in the City goal with no chance of saving.

A third goal for Brighton scored by Glen Rea was ruled out for offside before City earned themselves a late penalty. Striker Gethyn Hill took the opportunity well firing home a clinical penalty kick low to the keeper’s left to give the away side a late lifeline.

The home side hung on in the final few minutes though, to grab their first three point haul of the season.
