City knocked out of U-21 Premier League Cup

City’s hard working development side fell to a rare defeat on Friday night, Chelsea Football Club’s Academy going into the last sixteen of the U-21 Premier League Cup after a 4-0 win at Cardiff City Stadium.

Kevin Cooper’s men were unlucky to fall behind on thirteen minutes, referee Simon Knapp deeming Theo Wharton’s challenge on Isaiah Brown in the penalty area a foul to award the away side a spot kick. Lewis Baker stepped up to clinical slot the Blues into the lead following an end to end opening spell.

The home side continued to trouble their opponents throughout the first half and were nearly rewarded following so fantastic individual determination. Rhys Healey refusing to let the Chelsea defence control the ball, stealing the ball away before setting for Kane Owen to cross dangerously. The full-backs deep cross was headed superbly towards goal by Brad Williams with keeper Jamal Blackman diving at full stretch to somehow deny the City midfielder.

A fortuitous goal at the start of the second half saw the away side take control. Scotland Under-21 International Islam Feruz beating City 'keeper Wilson to the ball, with Owen’s goal-line clearance ricocheting off the home goalie and into the back of the net.

Chelsea substitute Alex Kiwomya added a third goal on fifty six minutes after running through and poking the ball over Wilson and beyond the outstretched leg of Maxi Amondarain. Dermot Drummy’s men completed the scoring with fellow substitute Jeremy Boga’s rasping right footed drive hitting the bottom right corner of City’s goal on sixty seven minutes.

A tough game for Kevin Cooper’s side, but plenty for the young Bluebirds to learn from in the coming months. City’s development side will now look ahead to league action, another strong test for City with a trip to last season’s Professional Development League 2 Champions Charlton Athletic before the festivities begin on December 16th.
