Caretaker Bosses call on City squad to rally against Wednesday

Cardiff City’s joint-caretaker managers Danny Gabbidon and Scott Young looked ahead to Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship game against Sheffield Wednesday in their Friday morning press conference.

The defensive duo told of their desire to get the Bluebirds back on track after a disappointing midweek defeat in the Capital One Cup.

Danny Gabbidon was quizzed on rumours about a new manager potentially coming into the Club, to which he responded: “I think that there’s always pressure involved with any manager that comes into a club. He will have pressure to do well, and obviously the recent results here haven’t been what we would have liked, but it’s still early in the season and there are a lot of games to go.

“The team are still learning and there are a lot of things which we would like to instil into the players, and I’m sure that the manager coming in will try to take that on. There’s still a long way to go, so we’re not totally worried at the moment, but we do want to start picking up points.”

Turning his attention to tomorrow’s match, Danny continued: “I think Sheffield Wednesday are a decent side. “It will be a little different to the Derby game; they will be a bit more direct, they’ll be very organised and will work hard. It’s going to be a good test, one which if we’re not up for the battle and not working hard for each other, it might be another long afternoon for us.

“We have go out and give a good performance – the second half against Derby was a lot better, and that’s what we’ll be looking for. Bournemouth gave us a footballing lesson on Tuesday and that was disappointing, but we can look at the negatives from that game and turn them into positives ahead of the weekend.

“We’ve got nine points, and for me this season we’ve only played one good half of football. There’s a lot of improvement to come, especially considering we’ve taken that many points when our performances haven’t been that great. We can become a really good team.

“Sheffield Wednesday have the best away record in the league, so this won’t be an easy game. It’ll be a good test for us.”

Scott Young echoed Danny’s sentiments, and revealed he was “enjoying every minute” of his time at Cardiff City, despite the Bournemouth defeat on Tuesday.

“We were hurt afterwards; all of the players were hurt,” Scott said in regards to City’s League Cup exit. “We debriefed the game afterwards and put it to bed, and now I think we just have to focus on the positives from the performance at Derby last Saturday. It’s not all been doom and gloom.

“It’s been quite simple for me and Danny. We arrive at the training ground, we get on the grass where we enjoy being, and we work hard. That’s all we can do – get the players motivated, lift them and get them working hard. There’s a strong group of players here with lots of quality. If we can get them believing in themselves again, certainly we can turn ourselves around.”

City fans have the prospect of seeing new loan signing Ravel Morrison in action this weekend, following Tuesday’s temporary move from West Ham United, with Scott confirming, “Ravel Morrison will certainly be involved with the squad. “He brings a lot of quality with him, and we’ve been assessing him over the last couple of days to make sure he’s fit and ready.

“He settled straight in with training yesterday morning - he knows Kiko, Fábio, Magnus and Mats from Manchester United, and I think he was with Nicky at West Ham. A few of the lads were impressed with what he did in training this week, and we want to get him involved as quickly as possible. That deal was in place before we took over, so the wheels were already in motion.

“This is our Football Club, and we’re passionate about this Club. We’ll take the team again tomorrow, and then we’ll sit down the following day and see where it takes us. I’ve been here for twenty-odd years now, and have experienced a lot of roles during that time. I’m enjoying every minute of it.”
