‘Welcoming a friend back home’

Speaking of the event, Cardiff City FC Executive Director & CEO Ken Choo said: “I’ve had the pleasure of meeting John on two occasions in the past month and am delighted that he’s going to come home to speak to our supporters.

“We’re welcoming a friend back home after too long away. John has played and managed some of the biggest clubs in the world, but there’s always been a place in his heart for the club he began his career with and with whom he enjoyed so many fantastic times.

“Coming home is something I know means a lot to him, as it will to all associated with Cardiff City FC.”

‘The boy from Canton’

John Toshack made history as Cardiff City’s youngster ever first-team player in November 1965 aged 16 years and 236 days old. It was a record that stood for forty-one years – eventually beaten by Aaron Ramsey in 2007 who, fittingly, John would hand a senior Wales debut as national team manager the following year.

Having scored ninety-nine goals over the course of five seasons at Ninian Park, John was signed by Bill Shankly for Liverpool FC. During his eight years at Anfield, the boy from Canton would establish himself as one of the finest players in Europe, winning national and European honours including the First Division Championship in 1973, ’76 and ’77, the FA Cup in 1974 and the UEFA Cup in 1973 and ‘76.

Staggeringly, John’s managerial success perhaps surpassed that which he enjoyed as a player. Having taken Swansea City from Division Four to Division One in successive seasons as a twenty-nine year old player-manager, John would go on to manage some the mighty Real Madrid on two occasions, as well as a host of other major European clubs including Real Sociedad, Sporting Lisbon and Besiktas.

During his time as Wales National Manager between 2004 and 2010, John would lay the groundwork for much of the success the side is currently enjoying, giving notable debuts to the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Ashley Williams.
