GUNNAR: “IT’S DOWN TO US”

Aron Gunnarsson has been in fine form in the engine room in recent weeks, contributing to some positive performances from the Bluebirds under Neil Warnock.

The scorer of City’s opening goal against Forest as they went three matches unbeaten, Gunnar has now been named Fans’ Man of the Match in successive matches for the Bluebirds.

Ahead of Saturday afternoon’s trip to face Newcastle United at St James’ Park, Gunnar was on press conference duties at the Vale Resort and looked ahead to the huge Sky Bet Championship clash.

“It’s going to be tough on Saturday”, he said. “We know how strong of a squad Newcastle have got. But it’s down to us – how we react and how we start the game.

“We’ve looked at them and they’ve got good players in basically every position. But we’ve been there before, and we’ve got results before. If we are at it and we get the game plan right, we’ve got a chance.”

Gunnar went on to reflect on his midfield partnership with Joe Ralls and Peter Whittingham – a trio that have combined to good effect for the Bluebirds in the centre of the park.

“We’ve got a three man midfield now and it’s working alright," he continued. "Obviously Rallsy and Whitts push on more than me, as they’re more creative players than myself.

“I stay behind them and try to cover the position that they leave when they go forward, and hopefully we’ll get more goals from midfield this season.”

With the international break coming up, Gunnar reflected on his incredible journey to the UEFA Euro 2016 Quarter Finals with his home nation.

The Iceland skipper also drew a comparison between his national side and the way that Neil Warnock has lined the Bluebirds up, adding: “I was happy to perform well for my country, and I’m always looking to perform well for Cardiff, because that’s my club. I’ve been here for a number of years now and I’m trying to get us to where Cardiff would like to be.

“[Warnock] wants the team to have a backbone and he makes players feel like they are wanted. He has given us a boost and that is what he’s done at every club that he has been at.”
