DVP: CARDIFF CITY 0-0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Club News

Cardiff City’s U23 Development side were held to a goal-less draw by Charlton Athletic at Leckwith International Stadium on Monday, 17th October 2016.

The young Bluebirds almost got off to the perfect start as it appeared that Marco Weymans deflected shot had given them the lead, but the linesman ruled that it was offside as it deflected in off Tommy O’Sullivan.

Another chance fell to Cardiff shortly after as Dimitar Mitov couldn’t hold onto Weymans powerful strike and the ball almost fell to Matthew Kennedy, save for some fast thinking from the Charlton defence.

Semi Ajayi almost gave Cardiff the lead with a powerful header just moments into the second half but Mitov managed to deny him.

Cardiff’s goalkeeper Brian Murphy was in equally impressive form as he denied a strong header from Regan Charles-Cook before getting down low to save Archie Edwards’ effort. Macauley Southam came up with a brilliant sliding interception to deny Charlton a clear goal-scoring opportunity minutes later.

The best chance of the game fell to Cardiff’s captain Tom James as Weymans found Tutonda with a quickly taken free kick and the full-back found James with the cross, who poked it just wide of goal.

Late substitutions from both sides sought to swing the momentum either way but the referees whistle blew signaled that both teams would come away with a point from a very close encounter.
