Will Spiers spoke to Cardiff City TV following the Bluebirds’ 3-1 victory over Arsenal U21s in the Vertu Trophy.
“It’s a good atmosphere in the dressing room right now,” Will began. “You obviously want to win games, but you know it’s going to be difficult against a side like Arsenal who are a category one academy, but we’re all really happy with the result and the performance.
“We said to each other before kick-off, if one of us goes we all go, and we all did that to a tee tonight. We backed each other up every single step of the way, and we have to take credit for that.”
Spiers started the game on the wing before switching to left back in the second half, and the versatile youngster explained that he’s happy to play anywhere on the pitch, especially when he’s on the scoresheet.
“It was a bit of a different night for me than I’m used to,” Will continued. “I’ve been playing right-wing when I’ve been with the U21s and picked up a few goals, but tonight I got the goal from a left-back spot. I don’t mind where I play for this team - I want to do a job wherever I play.
“It’s one of those cross-turned-shot situations. On the surface tonight in particular, if you put it into a dangerous area, you know there’s always a chance of it going into the back of the net. I think Luke [Pearce] missed the ball which helped a little bit for sure!”
The goalscorer concluded by praising the faith that Brian Barry-Murphy has shown in the Academy since his arrival at the Club.
“We all know in the Academy that there is a pathway into the First Team,” Will said. “The manager has given us all the belief that we can step foot onto this pitch one day. Luckily, I’ve made my debut, and he’s the only manager that’s given me that opportunity.
“There’s such a buzz around the Vale and the Academy right now, because we all know there’s a chance for us to play at Cardiff City Stadium.”
