Cardiff City defender Ronan Kpakio joined participants at a special FIT Bluebirds Circuit session on Monday 15 December, as part of the Club’s ongoing commitment to community wellbeing and education.
Held as the final session before the Christmas break, the evening brought together local residents for a low-cost, inclusive fitness class designed to help people stay active after completing the Club’s free 12-week FIT Fans programme. The session, led by Club Physical Trainer Matt Jones, welcomed adults aged 18+, with participants typically ranging around 40 years old.
Ronan took time out from the training ground to get involved in the session, meeting participants, joining in with activities and chatting with fans. His appearance was warmly received, reinforcing the positive impact that player engagement can have within community programmes.
TALKING SMART METERS WITH THE BLUEBIRDS
Alongside the fitness activities, discussions around smart meters took place throughout the evening, as part of the EFL’s partnership with Smart Energy GB, which aims to help supporters and communities better understand how to manage their energy use and costs with the help of smart meters.
Catherine Angle played a key role in sparking conversations around smart meters and everyday energy-saving habits, helping participants learn how small changes at home can make a real difference.
Ronan, who recently purchased his first home, shared his own experiences and interest in learning more about smart meters – highlighting how they can help households track energy use in real time, stay in control of bills and avoid estimated readings.
Just as players analyse performance data on the pitch, smart meters allow households to see what energy they’re using and when – making it easier to spot savings and make informed decisions.
Participants were also provided with smart meter informational leaflets, which were distributed during the session to ensure everyone went home with practical tips and further information.
FOOTBALL AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
The FIT Bluebirds Circuit sessions are open to anyone over 18 and offer an affordable way for people to stay active, social and supported, particularly during the winter months. With this session marking the last class before the festive break, engagement was strong and spirits were high.
Initiatives like this demonstrate how football clubs can use their platform to support communities beyond matchdays, combining physical activity, education and real-life support.
The event forms part of the wider EFL and Smart Energy GB partnership, which uses the power of football and its players to connect with fans, share trusted advice and encourage positive habits at home with the help of smart meters.
