Bute Energy Welsh Cup Final | Cardiff City 3-3 Swansea City (5-4 on pens)

City celebrate their Bute Energy Welsh Cup triumph.
City completed a mighty comeback on Sunday at Rodney Parade, coming from 3-0 down to secure the Bute Energy Welsh Cup trophy on penalties!

This is a fifth consecutive Bute Energy Welsh Cup triumph for the Bluebirds.

Fiona Barry gets City back in the game against Swansea City.

Both teams were up for the cup, although unable to create a clear chance in the game’s early stages. Mackenzie Olden found freedom on the edge of the box, but could not find a teammate in the box. Then, the Swans found fortune in the thirteenth minute as Chloe Chivers had time on the ball to loft home the opener. The Bluebirds controlled the momentum for the remainder of the first half but were unable to capitalise on their chances. Olden had the first of the opportunities, shooting from distance as Amelia Forkings denied the danger. Our no.9 was involved again shortly after, playing the ball through to Helen Evans, whose effort was driven over the bar. Olden again had the final effort of the half, finding herself with just the keeper to beat, but Forkings managed to clear her effort from danger.

The Swans managed two quick fire goals in the opening minutes of the second half through Aimee Deacon and Maisie Miller to take full control of the final.

The Bluebirds battled on despite the setback. Bushby made some impactful substitutions, including Maddison Perrott, whose impact was immediate, making her way through the Swans defence and creating a chance. It was a sign of things to come. In the 65th minute, substitute Fiona Barry made a daring run in behind and found herself in front of goal following Lily Billingham’s impressive through ball. Barry calmly slotted home what would be the start of the comeback.

Olden went close again soon after, getting on the end of a cross that was tipped over the bar. Soon after, Perrott won a corner. Shannon Evans muscled herself in the box and got on the end of Olden’s set piece, heading the ball over Forkings to get the second of the game. The Swans did everything they could to hold the advantage, but Barry had other plans, receiving the ball on the half-turn and firing it into the net to get her second of the afternoon and complete the comeback. City continued knocking on the door for the winner in the closing stages, though the game was forced to penalties.

Bushby’s side scored their first three penalties with ease. Stacey John’s third penalty was saved comfortably by the hands of Ceryn Chamberlain, who produced a confident save. With City now holding the advantage, Mikayla Cook stepped up to take the fourth penalty, slotting it home as the fans knew how close City were now. Although the Swans scored their fourth and fifth penalty, it all came down to Megan Bowen. Bowen stepped up for a nail-biting finish to an incredible game as Rodney Parade chanted her name, and calmly, as ever, tucked the ball away to win the cup. It’s safe to say it’s been quite the weekend to be a Bluebird!

MATCH REACTION | NOAH BUSHBY

An ecstatic Noah Bushby gave his thoughts following his side’s victory at Rodney Parade.

“We knew Swansea City were going to be a great opponent, and they were. It took so much character and passion to get over the line,” Bushby began. "We spoke at half-time about pride and passion. Although we conceded two after the break, we were brilliant from the 60th minute onwards. I’m so proud. We made a few substitutions and a tactical tweak. It was about belief. We believed we could get back into the game. We needed that goal, and fortunately, it came. I am proud of the players' response.

“My huddle before the penalties wasn’t about winning the match or what was in front of us; I just said how proud I was of the character that the team had shown to get back into the game.”

City’s Maddison Perrott celebrates with the Bute Energy Welsh Cup trophy.
MATCH REACTION | MADDISON PERROTT

Maddison Perrott gave her reaction to winning the Bute Energy Welsh Cup.

Perrott came on as a substitute and changed the game alongside Fiona Barry, bringing a skill set to the pitch that City’s opponents were unable to contain.

“I am so happy,” Maddison began. “This is my first big win with the club. I was over the moon. You saw the tears! It literally meant the world to me. Fiona (Barry) and I had the conversation when we were warming up on the sidelines. I said to her that we can come back from this, as we have the time to do so. And that is exactly what we did.

“We want to continue this momentum going into the next season. Noah (Bushby) is a fantastic manager, and I believe we will do big things again next season.”
