City in Focus | Charlie O'Brien settling in as a Bluebird

It's been a positive start to life in the Welsh capital for summer recruit Charlie O'Brien.

As well as immersing himself into our U21 group, the defender also gained a late call-up to be part of the First Team training camp in Spain.

Charlie joined the Club earlier this month having previously represented Cobh Ramblers in the League of Ireland.

“I’m settling in very easily," he began. "The people at the Club, the staff and all the players have been very welcoming, so it’s been an easy transition so far.

“The lads are top, they’ve all made a great effort with me. On the pitch, things have gelled well, so it’s been positive."

In the build-up to the First Team fixture against Southend United in Spain, City U21 trio Will Spiers, Morgan Wigley and O'Brien were called up to the training camp.

After a great opportunity to further his development, Charlie continued: “When I got the call, I was absolutely buzzing. I was delighted to have the call-up. It was great to be over there and be around the First Team squad.

“It was valuable to be able to learn from the experienced players that we’ve got in my position. You look up to them and try and take on as much information as possible.

“It gives you a boost and it’s always positive, but I’ve just got to keep building up my U21 performances and aim to get more opportunities."

City's U21s are in Nathaniel MG Cup action on Saturday against Ammanford, heading into the game on the back of a 3-2 victory over Yeovil Town at Huish Park in midweek.

The defender added: “It was a great test for us and it’s valuable to get minutes into the tank in pre-season. They were a good, physical side and I enjoyed it. It’s all good experience for us.

“The more games we play together, we’ll start to gel more. Also in training, the more sessions we have together, as pre-season goes on, that understanding will come more and more.

“I’m really excited to play in a competitive game on Saturday. It was good to get 45 minutes in the tank against Yeovil and hopefully now we can build towards a positive performance on the weekend.

“I love the competitive side of the game and when you have something on the line that you’re playing for. That brings a lot of excitement for Saturday."
