Cardiff City FC asks that Bluebirds fans show their support for Club legend Don Murray as his family look to provide ongoing care for him in his battle with Lewy body Dementia.
The former City defender began his career in the Welsh capital and played for the Bluebirds over 500 times in all competitions, a feat only surpassed by Billy Hardy and Phil Dwyer.
Between 1962-75, Don helped City to nine Welsh Cups, and as a result played in several famous European Cup Winners’ Cup fixtures, including that historic night at Ninian Park against Real Madrid in 1971.
Don also holds the record for most consecutive league appearances for the Bluebirds, playing an incredible 146 successive matches between May 1968 and November 1971.
DON’S BATTLE
Dementia with Lewy bodies is a type of dementia that can lead on to Parkinson’s, characterised by changes in sleep, behaviour, cognition, movement and regulation of automatic bodily functions. As a disease that gets worse over time, Don is now unable to care for himself, requiring round-the-clock assistance.
Along with the Murray family, the Club encourages supporters and friends to donate towards Don’s daily welfare and ongoing care.
Discussing the fundraising campaign, Don’s son Scott says: “My family and I would like to thank everybody who has found the GoFundMe page and donated since we set it up last week. We’re very appreciative of the support so far, and hope that City supporters can get behind a fundraiser that will provide further care for a man who gave his all for the Club every time he put on the blue shirt.
“Cardiff City means a lot to my father, and it was an honour for us to come to Cardiff City Stadium as a family last season and show Dad his picture displayed on the side of the stadium.”
All donations are appreciated to support the Murray family with its ongoing care for Don. Click here to visit the GoFundMe page.
