City vs. FC Midtjylland | Sory, that's the only link!

Sory Kaba
Saturday’s friendly fixture at Cardiff City Stadium will be the first meeting between the Bluebirds and FC Midtjylland. Although the two clubs have never faced each other before, they are linked through one player who made a lasting impression in South Wales.

In January 2023, City found themselves battling to avoid relegation from the Championship. Having been appointed as Bluebirds boss only a few days earlier, Sabri Lamouchi made a Deadline Day move to secure a signing who could bolster City’s attacking ranks. Striker Sory Kaba arrived on loan from FC Midtjylland for the remainder of the season, tasked with helping fire the Bluebirds to safety.

The Guinean came to the Welsh capital with plenty of experience from his time in Denmark. During his spell with Midtjylland, he scored 27 goals in more than 100 appearances, including seven goals in their 2019/20 Danish Superliga title-winning campaign.

His City debut came as a substitute in a 1–0 defeat away at Hull City, before the forward made first start at CCS against Middlesbrough. Kaba announced himself to the home supporters by scoring from close range, although City ultimately fell to a 3–1 loss. Despite the difficult start, Sory quickly became a popular figure among the Bluebirds supporters as City’s form improved significantly under Lamouchi, with Kaba playing a key role in the revival.

Perhaps his most memorable moment in a City shirt came away at Watford. In a crucial fixture in late April, with survival very much still on the agenda, the striker produced a spectacular bicycle kick in a key 3–1 victory at Vicarage Road. The strike was later voted as our 2021/22 Goal of the Season and remains one of the standout memories of that particular campaign.

Although his spell in South Wales lasted only a few months, Kaba made a lasting impact. His form in front of goal proved vital as the Bluebirds secured Championship survival. He finished his loan spell with eight goals in 17 appearances, finding the net in both the South Wales and Severnside derbies.

Following the end of his loan spell, Kaba returned to FC Midtjylland, making eight appearances and scoring once during the 2023/24 season before completing a move to Spanish side Las Palmas. He spent last season in Belgium with OH Leuven, where he enjoyed a productive 2025/26 campaign, netting nine times in 32 appearances.

On Wednesday, a new chapter in Kaba’s career was confirmed, as he joined Al-Dhafra in the UAE Pro League. Ahead of our meeting with Midtjylland, we’d like to wish Sory the best of luck with his move to the UAE!
